Projects In Brief

Greater schemings of the mind..

The Torn Red Carpet Gallery

Purpose:

To capture the spirit of and preserve the memories of Lindy Hop and other swing dances in the 21st century.

Focus:

  • Attend Lindy Hop or other associated dance events
  • To capture images of dancers, bands, or venues.
  • To maintain an online public gallery of these photographs.
  • Provide media to non-profit organizations to promote dancing and individuals for personal use.*
    • *(Make sure everyone's social networking page has a profile picture of them dancing)

Statement:

While some may view Lindy Hop as a small, relatively unknown subculture of the world, it must be admired how the dance grew from a ballroom and spread steadily across the globe, with dancers on every continent, interconnected by our love of the music and for the dance.

For those who would believe that Lindy Hop is an antiquated and obsolete dance, they should take a look at the modern culture of Lindy Hop. Bands keep playing sounds of traditional jazz and making new ones. DJs and collectors expose dancers to old collections, restored vintage recordings, and the newest music bands have to offer. Dancers research and learn from the masters and preserve the traditional aesthetic and spirit, while developing modern techniques and interpretations while incorporating and inventing new movements. Every single weekend of the year, cities around the globe host jazz dance events. Dancers travel from city to city, staying together with otherwise complete strangers if not for the passion they shared for dance.

All that is quite amazing, but it is nothing compared to the looks of joy I see on people's faces when we Lindy Hop. As Steven Mitchell said, "I don't think I've seen an unhappy person doing the Lindy Hop in my life."

Lindy Hop is very much alive and well.
